<bold> "We’re seeing the worst of Europe," in the weakening support for Ukraine, says German vice chancellor, contra Kissinger. <bold>
Global statesman Henry Kissinger, age 98, who was Secretary of State under Presidents Nixon and Ford, said it would be terrible for the west to get swept the pro-Ukraine “mood of the moment.” He called for Ukraine to negotiate with Russia, because, he said, the world needs Russia as a power. But he misses a possibility:
Maybe, say, a free, civilised, and prosperous Ukraine will make for better Europe, a Europe that doesn’t have to live in perpetual fear of a Moscow invasion. “I hope the Ukrainians will match the heroism they have down with wisdom,” Kissinger said telling Ukrainians to stay in their lane. See, the real problem, the real sin, of Ukrainians for the elite establishment was Ukraine’s 2014 Revolution of Dignity, when the people really decided they did not want to be ruled by a Putin puppet, like Belarus.
If the people hadn’t peacefully rebelled in 2014, there wouldn’t be this war. There wouldn’t be a need for it if they had quietly followed Putin's orders. Ukraine, Kissinger said, needs to be a neutral nation—whatever its people might want doesn’t matter. But not everyone at Davos agreed. Zelenskiy once again made the case that Ukraine is indeed the gates of Europe. If Ukraine loses, Russia will be empowered to continue its aggression against other nations.
Robert Habeck, the German vice-chancellor, lashed out at those Europeans not fully supporting Ukraine. “We’re seeing the worst of Europe,” he said, with special criticism for Putin ally Hungary.
